English in Mind (Day 7 of 11)

Today was our first day at “English in Mind,” a local program that enrolls 100 students in a free 5-year English program. The students are a variety of ages, from students in their final year of school, to adults well into their lives. They’re split into three classes for us to work with: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. I was to work with the beginner class, but let me tell you, “beginner” is incredibly far from the truth. We went in thinking that we’d be teaching incredibly basic vocabulary, before we knew it, we had thrown away that plan, and we were reviewing the Parts of Speech – which if I may say, I believe they knew them even better than I did. It was absolutely incredible to see how invested they were in the lessons, and the desire they had to learn and grow. As we connected with them, our discussions only grew deeper and more intricate, and it was definitely an experience I won’t forget any time soon.
